Sustainability Values: do they really matter?

Sustainability is highly values based.

Corporate values have long played a part in transformation programmes which support culture change. Once declared, leaders have often played a key role in “role-modelling” and “cascading” these values.  This drives transformation efforts and mindset shifts.

In 18 years of working in Organisational Development, I have often been part of these change programmes that typically “embedded” corporate values from the top down in organisations in support of change.

Well I have now changed my approach! We now need to act with a sustainability mindset when working with corporate values.  This means I need a more “social” approach rather than directing values from the top of the organisation.  This still means we have to role model them.  This also also means we need to co-create and get social with them.

The typical “top-down” approach, misses out key factors of “co-creation” and “partnership”.   This lies at the heart of sustainability philosophy. The new approach needs to balance Profit, People and Planet.  Values need to be socialised into the DNA of an organisation.

I will be outlining my research findings into the socialisation of organisational values in Oxford on 29th and 30th April 2025. Link below. Early bird discount applies – see link.
