Recycling and circularity … why should it matter to us?

Have you wheeled out your recycling bin this week full of Christmas wrapping paper and food plastic recycling?  It is rare that my bin is so full.  Christmas comes with a harsh reminder of the work I still have to do with my “stuff”.  Circularity starts at home!  Leadership begins at home!

This prompted my new goal for 2025 to recycle less!

How do I recycle less?

Many organisations are reviewing their business models to incorporate circular approaches to their supply chains and processes.  (I recently borrowed some gardening equipment from my local co-operative instead of buying more stuff!).  In business we need to repair more and make decisions on purchases that will last!  (All our office furniture at Chameleon Works is up cycled or repaired as a primary task).  We donated furniture to local charities too!

What is circularity?

In a world where resources like water, are finite, the “circular economy” offers a transformative approach to sustainability. Unlike the linear model we typically use as leaders of “take-make-use-waste”, the circular economy focuses on:

Preservingthis company extends the life of office furniture

Reusing – sites like the reusers in Birmingham are popular

Rehoming – popular ways to rehome your clothes to friends

Repairing – sites like the repair cafe have become very popular

and of course Recycling.

How can we introduce circularity to business?

For leaders of business, this means adopting innovative strategies such as:

  • Redesigning Products: Creating goods with durability, repairability, and recyclability in mind.
  • Rethinking Supply Chains: Collaborating with partners to minimise waste and close resource loops.
  • Adopting New Business Models: Transitioning to models like renting products, product-as-a-service, remanufacturing, or sharing platforms.

Implementing these principles isn’t just about protecting the planet—it’s about creating long-term value, driving efficiency, and meeting the expectations of socially conscious consumers and investors.

We will be focussing on circularity in everything we do in Chameleon Works in 2025 and also personally….starting with my choices at the checkout in my supermarket!
